Antique Religious Carving Bust, Santo Domingo de Guzman 12 Tall (SOLD)

Title: Antique Religious Carving Bust, Santo Domingo de Guzman 12 Tall
Description: Sacred to the Filipinos, these religious images introduced by Spain at the start of their more than 300 year reign can be found in many home altars as a sign of their devotion which does not solely revolve around the Catholic Church. These santos, usually carved out of wood, is embedded in the country’s tradition and is a testament to the Filipino people’s faith.
This bust of an unidentified male saint is done in the popular or folk style characterized by the disproportionate appearance of some of the features. This is largely due to the fact that most of these carvings were done by the everyday man who did not have any formal training in sculpture.
This “imperfect” santo is quite lovely and full of character. It would definitely make a good display and is an excellent addition to any collection.
This piece is a decorative reproduction believed to be about ten to fifteen years old.
