|Title||:||Vintage Pre-War St. Francis of Assisi Religious Icon, Santo Carving|
The Santero culture in the Philippines is widely prevalent among Filipino Catholics, having been influenced by colonial Spain and various forms of folk Catholicism. Icons and other religious images were crucial for the conversions of indigenous peoples to the Roman Catholic Church. This tradition has remained strong in the Philippines and as such many wonderful examples can be found today.
This lovely piece is of the beloved St. Francis of Assisi, founder of the Franciscan Order and the patron saint of all animals. Done in the popular folk style, he is easily identified here with his Franciscan Habit, tonsure and dove resting on his shoulder.
