|Title||:||Century Old St. Dominic, Sto. Domingo Wooden Santo Carving, Antique Statuette, circa 1800s|
In the Philippines, where the vast majority of Filipinos are Roman Catholics, many religious icons can be found.
This beautiful and old tradition was started by the Spanish when they colonized the Philippines in the 1500s and while their reign ended at the end of the 19th Century the tradition remains and is stronger than ever.
St. Dominic is a huge figure religious figure in the Philippines. He has a large following and rightfully so as he is the founder of the Dominican Order.
This carving of the famous saint is quite old as evident in the patina. The facial features have softened over time and both hands are missing. Many abrasions and cracks in the wood can be seen. These imperfections, instead of take away from the beauty of the piece, actually give the carving more character and is a testament to the statue’s old age.
It is carved from a single piece of wood by obviously skilled hands trained in the classical style of carving.
