|Title||:||Antique Virgin Mary, Immaculada Santo Statue c1900s|
The Philippines is quite unique. It is the only country in Asia with a dominating Christian religion. It is estimated that about 90% of the population are Christians. The religion was spread far and wide for over three hundred and fifty years by the colonizing Spanish and the religion is one of Spain’s biggest legacies to the Philippines.
The Filipinos have a natural flair for carving and many santos, old and new, can be found in most Filipino dwellings and indeed the majority of the santos that are put on sale are sourced from these homes.
This lovely Immaculada is believed to be about one hundred years old. She has lost most of her outer layers of paint and only a few traces can be seen here and there. Both her hands were also lost over time, a characteristic not uncommon for statues this old as they are carved from separate pieces of wood. An overall lovely piece that bears the patina of time.
