|Title||:||Antique Miniature San Roque, St. Roch Santo Statuette, 6.5 Inches|
In the Philippines, where the vast majority of Filipinos are Roman Catholics, many religious icons can be found.
This beautiful and old tradition was started by the Spanish when they colonized the Philippines in the 1500s and while their reign ended at the end of the 19th Century the tradition remains and is stronger than ever.
This miniature carving of the famous saint stands only 6.5 inches but the detail the carver was able to pack in is quite impressive. The saint is depicted here in the traditional manner with his garment lifted up to reveal the fatal wound on his leg making him one of the easier saints to identify. The wound was said to have been miraculously healed by a nobleman’s dog by licking the wound and bringing the saint bread.
The right arm is missing, a feature not uncommon for statues this old.
A small and charming piece sure to stand out in any antique collection.
