Description: The Santero culture in the Philippines is widely prevalent among Filipino Catholics, having been influenced by colonial Spain and various forms of folk Catholicism. Icons and other religious images were crucial for the conversions of indigenous peoples to the Roman Catholic Church. This tradition has remained strong in the Philippines and as such many wonderful examples can be found today.
This carving is a vintage reproduction depicting the beloved Virgin Mother. Marian devotion in the Philippines is quite widespread and as such her image can be found throughout the archipelago. This particular piece is called a bell type, so called for her shape resembling a church bell. She is done in the popular folk style and carved from a single piece of wood and is accented by a single cherub by her feet.
Measurement: It measures 11.3 inches in height and 8.3 inches across.
