The image of the Virgin Mother is one of the most venerated icons in the Philippines second only to Jesus Christ himself. Almost always the carving of choice among the faithful, statues such as this are widespread in the Islands and is a testament to the religiosity of the Filipino people.
This very old carving of the Virgin Mother is quite an interesting piece. It is carved in the popular folk style which is characterized by the squat and somewhat disproportioned appearance of the subject. This unique feature is very pronounced and obvious in this particular carving of the Virgin.
Carved from a single piece of heavy hardwood. She is missing both hands, a characteristic not uncommon for carvings this old.
