|Title||:||Antique 19th Century Wooden Santo Carving of Unidentified Male Saint|
The Santero culture in the Philippines is widely prevalent among Filipino Catholics, having been influenced by colonial Spain and various forms of folk Catholicism. Icons and other religious images were crucial for the conversions of indigenous peoples to the Roman Catholic Church. This tradition has remained strong in the Philippines and as such many wonderful examples can be found today.
This lovely carving of an unidentified male saint is a truly old piece as evident in the patina. It is done in the popular folk style of the locals characterized by the somewhat cartoonish and disproportionate appearance. An overall beautiful antique perfect for display or as an addition to your collection.
