Komedya De Baler

Title: Komedya De Baler
Author: Virgilio S. Almario
Synopsis: KOMEDYA DE BALER is an opportunity to clarify and evaluate the fact that the komedya, from the comedia introduced by the Spanish in the 17th century, is the first national theater of the Philippines. This view does not ignore the existence of ancient and native rituals and performances, as Pigafetta and Magellan’s soldiers witnessed in Cebu in 1521. While these rituals bore the essential qualities of theater, however, none could be considered “national.” There was no clear indication of cultural exchange happening beyond regional borders – as may be encompassed, for instance, by the regional languages spoken today – before Spanish colonial power prevailed all over the islands.
