Graciano Nepomuceno

was born in Trozo, Binondo 1881 died in 1974. (Sculpture, paintings) Studied painting under Miguel Zaragoza at Liceo Filipino, and sculpture under prize-winning sculptor Ciriaco Arevalo. Apprenticed under the well-known sculptor,Eugenio Llenera. Recd commissions to do the relief decorations for the ceiling of Malacañang Palace, and the façade of Metropolitan Theater. Also did a number of religious sculpture, among them the figure of St Francis in Quiapo is the bust of Jose Rizal done in bronze relief, Also did realistic polychrome figures of peasant types, such as a woman holding a clay pot and a grey-haired man proudly holding a rooster, their stances natural and the details of their costume meticulously indicated. Animal subjects also fascinated Nepomuceno. One of his secular sculpture portrays a man grappling and subduing crocodile, a genre work recalling 19th-century accounts of hunters fighting crocodiles in swamps, as in Paul de la Gironiere’s adventures. Another genre piece is that of a boy playing sipa and balancing the rattan ball on his ankle. Nepomuceno liked to do a form of tableaurelief which was often a transposition of a painting into a relief, as in his relief carving of Luna’s and of Leonardo da Vinci’s [CCP Vol IV-SP]
