Guillermo Tolentino

was born in Malolos, Bulacan, 1890 died Retiro, QC 1976. (Monumental sculpture & busts) Graduated from the UP school of Fine Arts,1915, a working student (Fernando Amorsolo was a classmate.) Ecole des Beaux Arts, NY, 1912-21, on a Bernard Baruch sculptor Gutzon Borglum while studying at night. Regge Instituto Superiore di Belle Arti, Rome, 1921-23 (Partly Supported by the Italian colony in Mla Trough Journalist Francisco Verona), graduating with highest honors. Taught at UP in 1926, later sitting as acting director in 1951 during the absence of Fernando Amorsolo, and director in 1953 retiring from teaching in 1955. Introduced plastic arts as a subject. As a young boy, was instructed in drawing by Mrs. H Bordner, one of the early thomasites, atr the Malolos Intermediate School. These early drawings were later featured in magazine. Left for the States in 1919 with only seven dollars in his pocket and a letter to a Visayan waiter, so he could get a job in a café in rock Creek Park, a favorite promenade of then President Woodrow Wilson. Seeing his works, Wilson arranged for an American millionare to give him an art scholarship. [CCP Vol. IV-SP and AG]
