Amorsolo Drawings

Title: Amorsolo Drawings
Author: the Lopez Museum
Synopsis: Few artists nowadays, especially the young ones, make drawing the foundation of their art. Classical wisdom looked at drawing as the probity of art. Contemporary artists paint directly on their canvases, preliminary studies and drawings are eschewed so as to give primacy to spontaneity. And – to render visible, all the thought processes; the search for form – which make up the painting. The modern view is to see painting as the document of a voyage into the self. Fernando C. Amorslo, the first Filipino genre painter given the National Artist award and perhaps – more significantly – the artist ever to rank first in the heart of his countrymen, actually believed, as the traditional classicist painters did, that drawing was the probity of art.
