Demetrio Diego

was born 1909, died 1988. ( Expressionist genre, illustrations ) Took up courses in fine arts at UP. Illustrator at and in the 1920’s and later chief artist of the from the 1950’s to the early ‘70s. Drafting style was robust, tonal values refined and dramatic, thus ideal for the illustration of short stories and serialized novels. Because of his vigorous lines (and the bold brushworks of his paintings), Victorio Edades regarded him as a potential modernist, and enlisted him as one of the Thirteen Moderns. Works of early period best represented by 1948, containing elements that in two years time would appear as traits of Neorealistic genre. Served as pres of the Society of Phil Illustrations and Cartoonists, 1964-1965. Won 3rd prize at the second Natl Art Contest sponsored by KALIBAPI in 1944. Won 2nd prize at the first AAP Annual of 1948. [CCP Vol IV- SP]*** Served as art consultant of the publications in later years after retiring in 1970, when he began to paint in earnest. Tendency to stylized or exaggerate figures in a kind of folk-surrealism was greatly admired by Vicente Manansala, another of the Thirteen. He leaned towards green and earth-brown hues in landscape renditions of his hometown under a Van Gogh Influence . Had a period, no doubt influenced by Amorsolo and Francisco Last works were on antique wooden doors and windows instead of canvas. Last exhibit was a major one, show in 1982 at Midtown Art Center.
