The Great Malayan: The Biography of Rizal

Title: The Great Malayan: The Biography of Rizal
Author: Quirino
Synopsis: Obstreperously patriotic Filipinos have long reduced the greatest hero of the Philippines to the category of its independence question – something they glibly talk about, but know very little about. Rizal is undeniably a source of pride to his countrymen. So many monuments have been built to his memory that one wonders whether the powers-that-be believe that brass and stone suffice to show the love and admiration of a nation. To enlighten his countrymen and incidentally win a prize for himself, Carlos Quirino, young but leading biographer of President Quezon, has undertaken the difficult task of writing a biography of Rizal. Quirino did not go to Europe or live there like Retana and Craig, in order to delve into dusty archives for a better understanding of his hero. Nevertheless, he has been able to gather virtually all the important details about the martyr’s life abroad and make a thorough study of the subject.
