Abdulmari Imao (Sculptures)

National Artist, is popularly known for his monumental geometric sculpture and sarimanok paintings. Draws inspiration from the Tausug and Maranao artistic of southern Philippine, particularly the art of the okir wood carving design, which he reinterpreted in a contemporary manner. Has four distinct and interrelated themes; Islamic calligraphy, the sari manok (a mythical bird with fish), the sari mosque (a sarimanok and the form of the mosque, and the sari-okir. Has executed these themes in different sculptural processes, mainly metal casting, welding, embossing or repousse, as well as painting, Has made use of different mediums, but mainly brass and bronze in both paintings and sculpture. Has highly developed technological basis in his moulds of dolomite or white carbide stone, ignited or fossilized coal, or raw marble dust, technologies widely adapted in the Southeast Asian region.
