Jose Hernandez

was born in Tondo, Mla 1944. Graduated Pampanga High School, 1963; in his senior year, on scholarship from Pres Diosdado Macapagal. After the war, family moved to San Fernando, Pampanga, after his father accepted an offer to teach law at Harvadian College. Family established their own school in San Fernando, the Luzon Women’s Fashion School, 1948-’62. In the mid-‘50s, apperenticed Nards Mendoza, who ran a movie poster and theater display shop; and in the mid ‘60s, under Fernando Amorsolo until the latter’s death. Also recd lessons in figure painting from Carlos Francisco. Frequented the studio of Vicente Manansala and Mabini artist Ben Alano, Simon Saulog, Miguel Galvez, and Cesar Buenaventura. In 1965, joined his Mabini mentors in a group exhibits at the Natl Library, Luneta. Was represented by the Conrado Zabian Gallery in Angeles, Pampanga in the ‘60s. In 1974-’77, opened his own gallery in Angeles, the Friendship Art Shop. Also opened a frameshop-art-gallery in Bacoor, Cavite, Washington in 1980 at the Fine Arts Gallery. His painting in 1980 at the Fine Arts Gallery. His painting was reproduced in a UNICEF greeting card. Finalist, Art ’95 Intl Competition, Bardonia, NY [20th CENT Vol II-MD]
